OCCASIONALLY OUR CUSTOMERS ENCOUNTER THEIR SOIL BEING HOT OR NOT ABSORBING WATER. THE FOLLOWING IS SOME INFORMATION ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND A SOLUTION.
Due to the fresh organic nature, these products can be in the process of breaking down making the product "hot". When soil will not take water it becomes hydrophobic which causes water to collect on the soil surface rather than soak in. . Here's what we suggest for these two conditons. Get a spray nozzle, spray the surface of your soil with water as you fill your beds. Then leach, watering all the way through thoroughly, before the surface dries. This process will decrease the hydrophobic condition as well as cool your soil blend. The ability for your soil to absorb water will last as long as the surface is damp.
Shredded Cedar Mulch A mulch is anything used to smother weeds and keep water from eveporating. (Weeds out Water in). 3-4 inches is recommended, but 2-4 inches thick is sufficient. Shredded cedar mulch is complete tree scraps shredded into a strip like texture. Irrigation lines should run under any mulch material. Keep approx 8" away from plant/tree trunks to prevent wicking by bark and causing crown rot. $32 per yard $19 per 1/2 yard
*Wood fines are clean 1/4" or smaller pieces of wood.
*Miscellaneous inert debris includes small pieces of plastic, glass, metal, etc, typically less than 3/8." In an effort to recycle and re-use green waste from local sources, we use 4 Course Compost in our bulk soil mixes. 4 Course Compost is derived from food waste and green waste. The compost passes through a 3/8" screen; any debris smaller than that can pass through the screen and into the bulk compost (occassionally glass, plastic, or metal wire). 4 Course Compost is produced at a fully permitted and regulated Compost facility.
